when the ruling class hurls the bait of reservation in employment or higher education, the students and unemployed youth belonging to middle class and upper castes, who are already dependent on jobs for their livelihood think that the “dalits” and backward castes are now even robbing them off their remaining opportunities of employment with the aid of the crutches of reservation. They are unable to perceive this ground reality that in fact the opportunities for employment have dwindled away so much that even if the reservation is completely brought to an end, not all the unemployed from the upper castes will get employment. Similarly the youth belonging to “dalit” and backward castes fail to realise that if the percentage of reservation is raised a little more and if it is implemented in an honest and effective manner, even then not even fifty percent of unemployed youth from “dalit” and the backward castes will obtain employment. Whatever meagre opportunities for employment will be available to them, even their benefits will primarily be reaped by an exceedingly small population of “dalits” who have joined middle class and people belonging to economically, socially and politically influential backward castes; and the vast majority of population living their lives as proletariat-semi proletariat will obtain almost nothing from it.

धर्मं भी अवश्य होगा…। यह उन्हें सिखाएगा कि सच्‍चा जीवन शार्कों के उदर से ही आरम्भ होता है और यदि शार्क मनुष्य हो जाएं तो छोटी मछलियों आज की तरह समान नहीं रहेगी, उनमें से कुछ को पद देकर दूसरों से ऊपर कर दिया जाएगा । कुछ बड़ी मछलियों को छोटी मछलियों को खाने तक की इजाज़त दे दी जाएगी । यह शार्कों के लिए आनन्‍ददायक होगा क्योंकि फिर उन्हें निगलने के लिए बड़े ग्रास मिलेंगे और छोटी मछलियों से से सबसे महत्वपूर्ग जिनके पास पद होगे, वे छोटी मछलियों को व्यवस्थित करेंगी । वे शिक्षक, अधिकारी, बक्से बनाने वाली इंजीनियर आदि बनेंगी। संक्षेप में, समुद्र में संस्कृति तभी होगी जब शार्क मनुष्य के रूप में हो ।

यह विख्‍यात कविता गोर्की ने 1905 की पहली रूसी क्रान्ति के दौरान क्रान्तिकारी मज़दूर वर्ग की अपार ताकत और साहसिक युगपरिवर्तनकारी भूमिका से परिचित होने के बाद उद्वेलित होकर लिखी थी जो पूँजीवादी दुनिया की अमानवीयता को सर्वहारा वर्ग द्वारा दी गर्इ चु‍नौती का अमर दस्‍तावेज बन गई। अपनी गुलामी की बेड़ि‍यों को तोड़कर पूरी मानवता की मुक्ति और उत्‍कर्ष के लिए पूँजीवादी विश्‍व के जालिम मालिकों के विरूद्ध तफानी रक्‍तरंजित संघर्ष की घोषणा करने वाले शौर्यवान और साहसी सर्वहारा को गोर्की ने इस कविता में बादलों और समुद्र के बीच गर्वीली उड़ानें भरते निर्भीक पितरेल पक्षी के रूप में देखा है जो भयानक तूफान का चुनौतीपूर्ण आहावन कर रहा है। समाज के कायर, बुजदिल बुद्धिजीवियों तथा अन्‍य डरपोक मध्‍यमवर्गीय जमातों को गोर्की ने तूफान की आशंका से भयाक्रान्‍त गंगाचिल्लियों, ग्रेब और पेंगुइन पक्षियों के रूप में देखा है। जिस क्रान्तिकारी तूफानी परिवर्तन का आना निश्चित है, ऐतिहासिक नियति है और जिसके बिना मानव समाज और मानवीय मूल्‍यों की मुक्ति और उत्‍कर्ष असम्‍भव है, उसके भय से अपनी मान्‍दों में दुबकने वाले समाज के ग्रेब, पेंगुइन और गंगाविल्लियों के समानान्‍तर पितरेल सर्वहारा वर्ग के साहस, जीवन दृष्टि और भावनाओं-मूल्‍यों को जितने सुन्‍दर बिम्‍बों-रूपकों में बान्‍धकर गोर्की ने यहां प्रस्‍तुत किया है वह अद्वितीय है।
